Stem Cells of the Intestine

Illustration for Dr. Clever's paper "Searching for adult stem cells in the intestine".

Published in EMBO Molecular Medicine vol.5, 2009.

Section A shows a normal crypt with a single stem cell labeled blue.

In section B the offspring of the labeled stem cell is seen by the blue stain. It moves up the villus towards the tip of the adjacent villus. This continuously renewing "blue ribbon" remains present for the life of the mouse.
